About the Toxic Triangle project
The Toxic Triangle consists of three forces that shape the online world that young people experience:
- Youth Sphere is an ecosystem that shapes the culture of an entire generation of young people through its role in identity formation.
- Marketplace is where platforms, creators, advertisers, and large AI content farms exchange engagement for social and financial currency.
- Attention Machine captures and calibrates attention from users to maximize reach and time spent online.
Together, these three components create a feedback loop that often sacrifices young people's wellbeing and resists simple fixes.
The Toxic Triangle experience invites policy makers, foundations, journalists, and civil society organisations to witness the online environment young people find themselves in every day. It brings to life the issues that are currently being fiercely debated in public discourse but often only understood on a theoretical level.
Usually presented in person, in closed-door sessions, The Toxic Triangle is previewed here as a behind-the-scenes webinar to offer a small snapshot into the project and show viewers how we conducted our research and what expert participants are saying about it.
